Modern workspace launches in honour of historic munitions workers

On 14 September The Shell Store will officially open its new coworking space as part of a celebration of local business and modern working, giving attendees the chance to showcase themselves and connect with hundreds of other potential partners, suppliers and customers.

The coworking space will be unveiled as ‘The Canary Suite’ in recognition of the famous munitions workers who historically saw their fingers turn yellow from working with TNT at the site during the second world war.

The open house and launch event, held at the workspace on Skylon Park in Rotherwas, will feature a host of local businesses, freelancers, organisations, Council and community members, as well as food and drinks and the unveiling of the new space. Organisers are encouraging anyone who wants to attend to register online.

Carl Turner, Community Director of Town Square Spaces Ltd, the company that operates The Shell Store on behalf of Herefordshire Council, said that the Canary Suite was a wonderful synergy of history and the new way of working.

Carl said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this celebration of local business, including the opening of The Canary Suite. The historical significance and the importance of the work that took place at the Shell Store is woven into the foundations of what is now a modern workspace that has become the home to so many vibrant and exciting businesses.

“A coworking space is the beating heart of any modern workspace. It not only provides a workspace for the freelancers and remote workers who may not need a whole office, but want to break away from the coffee shops and kitchen tables – but it also connects people.

“As a freelancer or small business, the ability to simply turn to your left and talk through challenges with someone experienced who may have solved the very issue you are facing is invaluable. You just don’t get that working from home or in a coffee shop – and it’s what adds a real value to working in such a vibrant space.

“The chance for so many local businesses and organisations to get together at the Open House will be a real celebration of what the area has to offer. Stand space is being snapped up quickly, with over half already gone, so I’d encourage anyone who wants to showcase themselves to get in touch.”

The open house event will begin at 10:00 where stall holders will be able to network with over 100 other businesses and community partners, before the launch of the Canary Suite at 12:00, followed by a complimentary lunch at 12:30.
